Laughter
In The Air - An Informal History of British Radio Comedy, by Barry Took,
has been republished and is due for release on December 1st, 2001. At
least that's what I've heard on the grapevine. It's quite possible it
won't happen on the above date, but it will happen. After all, we're
still waiting for the Hugh Lloyd publication - Thank
God for a Funny Face, which should've been released a few months
ago now. So anything can and probably will happen before then. For those
that haven't got an old copy however, it's one of the harder to find
books in the Hancock
book collection, I had to get mine from Australia, this is
your chance to stop trawling the second-hand book shops and just pre-order
Online at WH
Smith. I will of course be buying a copy, even though I already
have it twice (hardback
and paperback)
for the purposes of display here at The Cuttings. This book
is a highly recommenced read...

CDs featuring 8 Half-Hour shows from Series 3 |
Duration:
4 hrs - ISBN: 0563478136 |
| It now seems that the BBC haven't made an effort to borrow back a copy of The Diet, a lost show from this series, that the T.H.A.S. have in their archives. I can only imagine the show must be very poor quality and not *cleanupable. I must admit to hearing this show awhile ago, but can't remember how bad it was. I'll have to dig it out and have a listen. The 8 shows that will appear on this 4 CD set is as follows: The Pet Dog | The Jewel Robbery | The Bequest | Hancock's Hair | The Student Prince | The Greyhound Track | The Conjuror | The Test Match One last thing! Going back to the first sentence above. I would have thought the BBC have lost a good opportunity to release this lost, but now found show (all be it of poor quality), on this CD set. I would have loved for something to have been done. Even if it hadn't been great quality (surely they could have improved it a bit) it would have been nice to have added it to this compilation. I can't see there being another CD release of these radio shows for many years, if at all. It could have gone on a separate CD, all on it's own. I can only think they thought it would ruin their "luxury box set"! Maybe I'm missing something here and someone knows the answer already... *not in the dictionary. I just made it up! Check here: The complete tv and radio guide - The BBC radio series, to see what you can expect in the 4th box set - it's going to be a biggie! I wonder if the box will be yellow? |

The new
look Hancock book collection is ready for viewing. And...

The Hancock
book collection has now been made slightly more comprehensive.
To have made it completely comprehensive (have all 300 odd books, released
that mention 'the lad himself', up until now), in this short space of
time, would've taken many hundreds of £'s and lorry loads of effort!
I am working on it though. You can be assured of that. It may take the
rest of my remaining days on this big bulbous ball-like globular object
to complete, but I will do it, and I'm sure it'll be worth it. Right!
Now that I've got that out of the way... Most of the books that go to
make up the first section / category: Books wholly dedicated
to 'the lad himself' (starts on page 1),
and is complete already, with the books I have. There are only a few
books I'm still trying to acquire for this category. Hopefully they'll
be added soon, but these last few are very rare, so it could still be
a while yet. The second section / category: Books which have
major sections or paragraphs about 'the lad himself' (starts
on page 6),
and the third section / category: Books that mention 'the lad
himself' in passing (starts on page 13).
All in all, there are about 350 odd books. The last two categories contain
most of them. I don't have then all, not even a third! The books I do
have (and which are being added to all the time, normally at the rate
of at least two a week), will be seen at the Hancock
book collection very soon. So please visit often. It may have
changed when you next return, I'm working on it! Hope you like what
I've done. I've / am certainly enjoyed / enjoying doing it. Sorry if
the pages take a while to load, but this is unfortunate and indeed deliberate.
Each book has two images that need to load. After the first / front
image of each books cover has loaded, then the second / back will start.
Once both images (front and back) have loaded you can then move your
mouse pointer over a book to reveal the back of each books cover. Enjoy!

During the
process of building up this book collection I have learned about the
rarity of some of the books that have been, and will be (in the very
near future), added to the Hancock book collection. The rarer
books are normally very expensive, and in some cases up to five or ten
times their original cost! You can expect to pay anything from £1
- £100 for some of the books on these pages, depending on condition,
which can play a big part in the final cost. You may even, if you're
dedicated enough, have to obtain them from as far afield as the USA,
Australia and New Zealand, as indeed I've had to do. It really has been,
and is, fun and I can highly recommend it. Just make sure you've got
a well fed cheque book handy, if you're going to try and collect more
then just a couple of the rarer titles!

|
Please
note: Providing
you don't delete your browsers cache / history you'll not need to load
the images again on subsequent visits to The Cuttings, unless
the images have been updated, which they won't for awhile yet, as I
only do it occasionally (shame!). So you'll only need go through this
painful process once in awhile. Unless you've got your browsers cache
/ history set to be deleted automatically after a few days. Mine is
set to 999 days! With the size of today's hard drives there really is
no need to try and save space, so don't delete your browsers history,
unless you've got something to hide! You can change or check you browsers
settings, in Internet Explore, under: 'Tools / Internet Options... /
History / Days to keep pages in history'.

Numerous
other alterations...
|
|
Many alterations
and additions have been made over the last month or so. This is the
first chance I've had to mention any of them. I'm always late! I know
you are, I hear you all say! I hope you've noticed them however. As
I'm sure you have, if you're a regular. Hope you're enjoying them. Welcome
to those that are new to The Cuttings. The Hancock
video collection and Hancock
film collection are now finished. So indeed is the Hancock
audio collection, with the new style / design. I still need
a few tapes to complete these collections. Some I already have, but
am yet to add. There's just so much to do! They will appear very soon.
Various other small amendments / additions have been made - too numerous
to mention, so I won't. I hope you'll forgive me. That's all I'm going
to say for now. I just thought it was about time I added some news to
this section. One last thing! The main page pic hasn't been changed
yet, as I'm sure you've noticed. I will try and do it in the very near
future. I promise. So there it is...

One last thing - just an update on an earlier piece of news posted 6th Sept, here, which refers to the forthcoming re-run of the Hancock Face to Face interview with John Freeman on BBC Knowledge, September 14 at 8pm.
There is a two thirds of a page review by Russell Davies entitled "Hancock's high noon", in the current issue of the Radio Times dated: 8 - 14 September 2001, on page 17
Well worth a read, if you haven't already. You should still be able to get a copy of this Radio Times if you're quick enough! |

4
or 5 CDs featuring 8 or 9 half-hour shows from Series 3
|
|
The next installment will soon be upon us from the good old beeb. The shows that are included in this 4 or 5 CD box set (depending on whether they release The Diet, which they had previously wiped/lost, but the T.H.A.S. have a copy, so they might have borrowed theirs!) are as follows; 1. The Pet Dog 2. The Jewel Robbery 3. The Bequest 4. Hancock's Hair 5. The Student Prince 6. The Greyhound Track 7. The Conjurer 8. The Test Match Another worthy tribute to the comic genius of Tony Hancock and the brilliant writing of Ray Galton & Alan Simpson. Life-changing
Hancock interview to be broadcast again! A year after being questioned by John Freeman, Hancock ended his successful partnership with writers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. He also stopped working with co-star Sid James. The televised interview exposed Hancock as an insecure man behind a comic persona. After its broadcast, Hancock realised for the first time that his audience was interested in him, as well as in his comedy. The 1960 show was one of the classic encounters in the groundbreaking Face To Face, in which stars and politicians faced direct and probing questioning from former New Statesman editor Freeman. |
