The entertainment world is mourning the death of Sir Harry Secombe, famed for his work with The Goon Show, who died on Wednesday, 11 April. The 79-year-old performer died in hospital in Guildford, Surrey, from prostate cancer with his wife, Myra, at his bedside. The Secombe family said in a statement: "We are grieving for a wonderful man, and a much loved husband, father and grandfather."

A statement from Prince Charles, a long-established fan of the Goons, said: "I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sir Harry Secombe, to whom I spoke only recently in hospital. He was one of the great life enhancers of our age and gave pleasure and constant happy laughter to so many of us throughout his life."

1921 - 2001

Sir Harry Secombe was a good friend to Tony, and in fact wrote the preface for Roger Wilmut's book Tony Hancock 'Artiste' - A Tony Hancock Companion. I shall endeavour to put this online soon - so watch this space... Then you'll be able to read what Sir Harry had to say about our great mate.

Takes you back home...

This month (April) I've had a request for the Main page picture. In fact it's the only request I've had concerning the said pic since I asked for requests. For that very reason, I've decided I'm going to honour it! It was from a lady called Barbara. Who asked if I could use a picture of Smudger Smith's (Hugh Lloyd) wife, Mavis (Eileen Way), from The Reunion Party (6th show of the 4th series), as the Main page picture. Hope you enjoy it Barbara. BTW, She had this to say in her e-mail to me; "...especially Smudger's wife - she's a picture in herself!" I must say I have to agree. I'm only sorry I didn't have a better picture.

So come on people. Start requesting. And you too could have a picture, of your choosing, as the Main page picture, on: www.tony hancock.co.uk. Providing I've got a picture relating to your recommendations. You may even have the relevant picture yourself? If so, you could send it to me, at this addy: e-mail and I'll promptly consider it. You never know, you might be the only person to send a request and then I'll feel obliged, as I did with Barbara, to use your suggestion. So what are you waiting for...

The Hancock book collection has been updated.

The Hancock book collection is coming along nicely too. Three new books added. I've been after the Corgi version of the HANCOCK book for ages. Now I've picked up a nice copy. Cost me an arm & a leg though. I've added it, and the other two, on the Hancock book collection here: Anthony Aloysius St John HANCOCK - Corgi P/B , for your delectation. The other two are books that mention Hancock, but are not wholly dedicated to the lad himself. They are both very nice books, covering various UK Television shows that most of us would also have an interest in, if you like TV shows from the good old days.

3 CDs featuring 5 Half-Hour shows from Series 2
Duration: 2 hrs 30 mins - ISBN: 0563478004

The next installment is upon us from the good old beeb. They seem to be coming thick and fast - which is fine by me. No sooner had I won the first CD box set, by answering two questions on the lad himself, on a BBC Radio 4 quiz, had this second CD box set arrived. All I can say to the BBC is - double thank you! The shows that are included in this 3 CD box set are as follows;

The Holiday Camp | The Chef that Died of Shame | The Rail Strike | The Television Set | The Marrow Contest

Another worthy tribute to the comic genius of Tony Hancock and the brilliant writing of Ray Galton & Alan Simpson. Check here: The complete tv and radio guide - The BBC radio series, to see what you can expect in the 3rd box set.

The Hancock record collection has been updated. Again!

I'm adding nicely to my collection at the moment. Although it's becoming harder to find records in A1 condition, as most are so old. I never even knew what this one looked like, up until the day I bought it (a couple of weeks ago). I'd never seen it before anywhere, although I did know of its existence. The cover of this record has been added here: IT'S HANCOCK - DECCA. The two shows included on this LP are; The Missing Page & The Reunion Party (DECCA LK 4740, 1965), both full length versions. This was the first release of this record. There was a subsequent release (DECCA PA 417), which you can also see by clicking the pic below.

Takes you back home...
This month (March) I've chosen a pic from the BBCtv series 'Hancock' - The Radio Ham (1961). Featuring Tony with Edmond Richfield Bernard Hunter as the two policemen. The Radio Ham is one of my favourite shows from the seventh and last series of 'Hancock'. I'm already thinking about what I'm going to put up next month. Any ideas would be gratefully excepted. So start sending those e-mails and I'll see if I've got any pics relating to your recommendations.

Two new record covers (front & back) have been added. Volumes One & Two of Little Pieces of Hancock (both 7" mono EPs). I must take this opportunity to thank Steve Ford for sending them to me. Thanks Steve. BTW, If any of you fellow Hancock lovers out there have any memorabilia/collectibles, that you don't see around the Cuttings, I'd be very interested in receiving a scan of the said item/s, if possible. Together we can make this the most comprehensive Hancock related memorabilia/collectibles Web site around. Thanks in advance for your help.

A few minor additions.

Just a few updates, to some of the pages on The Cuttings. I've added a couple more videos, here: http://www.tonyhancock.co.uk/videotapes.htm. I've also added the latest edition of the Freddie Ross/David Nathan biography 'Hancock', which has been revised, but unfortunately doesn't include any pictures this time round (a slight backward step if you ask me). You can see it by going here: 'Hancock' by Freddie Ross Hancock & David Nathan, or, alternately, you can read the introduction, by going here: 'Hancock' introduction. The BBC are due, very soon, to release the 2nd CD box set from the Hancock Half-Hour radio series. This set will be smaller then the first, which contained 10 shows, as there are not as many remaining shows in the BBC archives from this series. Check here: http://www.tonyhancock.co.uk/guide_radio.htm, to see what you can expect in the 2nd box set. I hope, very soon, to scan the sleeves/packaging from the 1st CD box set and hang them on the walls of the Cuttings for all to see. I will put together another section, probably called the Hancock CD collection, which sounds appropriate, as the BBC do intend to release all 74 remaining shows in the very near future. I for one can't wait :-)

For this month of February I've chosen a pic from the ATV series 'Hancock' - The Assistant (1963). Featuring Tony with Patrick Cargill. I had the pleasure of meeting Patrick at a plaque unveiling, a few years before he died. A very nice, quiet, man. I wonder what I'll put up next month. Now let me think...

The Hancock gallery has had more pics added.

They include: Hancock with Archie Andrews & Peter Brough, Moira Lister & Graham Stark, plus various TV shows. Click here, to go straight to the relevant page. I've reformatted/gave a bit of a clean up to the Cuttings, not that anyone will notice. That's all for now ;-)

With just a few spelling mistakes, I suspect.

Some, although I hope none of you, might find the site a bit bandwidth hungry! What I've tried to do here at Railway Cuttings is give you something you can't get anywhere else on the Web. That is quality, pictures/graphics/informative, in a well laid out, easy to navigate, Hancock related Web site. I, before I started this adventure, couldn't find certain information that I was after. Being interested in memorabilia/collectibles and a love of the great man himself, not forgetting the genius of Galton & Simpson, I decided to Do-It-Myself. I don't have everything, not yet anyway, but I'm on the way. You can be sure that as soon as I come across something new, that I feel is relevant to the Cuttings, I will add it. If anyone has a record, book, CD, audio or video tape, that is not somewhere around the Cuttings, then I'd be happy to hear from you and maybe get a photo of the item, so I can add it to the relevant area of the site. Together we can make this the most comprehensive Hancock related memorabilia/collectibles Web site around. Thanks in advance for your help.
A few enhancements to the site, depending on the way you look at it! As I become more proficient in DHTML/JavaScript I will, as I've already started to do, add some of this code to the site. A couple to note, as of now, are the Double Click on any white area of a page to move to the top of that page. Some people have said it would be a nice idea, and I have to agree, as some of the pages are quite lengthy (I do get a bit carried away sometimes!), depending on the screen resolution you view the page at. The other is, what those in the trade call, a Pull - Scroller. This will allow messages to be put at the bottom, left-hand side, of the browser window (Status bar). Keep an eye out here, as you will get information such as when the Cuttings was last updated (also on the Hancockian News section) as well as anything else I feel is relevant. Please make sure you've got JavaScript enabled on your browser, to benefit from these enhancements.
Those not new to the Cuttings might have noticed a change of picture on the main page. I will change this every month, from now on. I've picked The Missing Page (BBCtv) for this January 2001. I wanted to see our mate Sid, as he always puts a smile on my face.

The Hancock gallery has been updated. Six new pictures added, from various TV shows.

5 CDs featuring 10 Half-Hour shows from Series 1
Duration: 5 hrs - ISBN: 0563477547
Hancock's Half Hour was one of the most successful series ever made and created an international star. With his impeccable timing and brilliantly subtle shifts in intonation, Tony Hancock could create sound pictures that bore the unmistakable hallmark of a genius. The BBC broadcast eighty hours of Hancock on radio and television between 1954 and 1961. Now BBC Radio Collection is publishing, in chronological order, all 74 surviving radio shows from the BBC Archives with an accompanying booklet that contains an introduction from the show's writers Galton & Simpson, a history of the show with contemporary press extracts and photos, episodes synopsies for all shows including the missing ones, and biographies of the cast. Ten shows remain from the first series, which are published here on five CDs in a luxury box set. From Hancock connoisseur to first-time fan, this completely comprehensive collection makes for essential - and fantastically funny - listening. A worthy tribute to the comic genius of Tony Hancock.
